IMPLEMENTING THE JOINT COMMISSION
PERINATAL CORE MEASURES:
WHAT, WHY AND HOW?

APRIL 13, 2010
8:00am — 3:30pm
UCI Medical Center
101 The City Drive
Orange, Ca 92863
Bldg. 53, Auditorium

DESCRIPTION

Beginning next year, Joint Commission accredited hospitals will be able to report on a set of perinatal
care core measures to meet Joint Commission accreditation requirements. The perinatal care measure
set will replace the existing pregnancy and related conditions measure set. Data collection is set to begin
with April 1, 2010 discharges.

The five measures have been endorsed by the National Quality Forum (NQF) and represent three
domains of care: assessment/screening, prematurity care and infant feeding. Hospitals that voluntarily
choose to use this set of measures will collect and report data on the following measures: Elective
Delivery, Cesarean Section, Use of Antenatal Steroids, Health Care-Associated Bloodstream Infections in
Newborns and Exclusive Breast Milk Feeding.

This conference will provide the attendee with an overall understanding of the perinatal core measures
and will explore each of the five new measures individually . Presentations will discuss the rationale
behind the measures and how to implement this new set. The program is designed for perinatal nurses,
pediatricians, obstetricians, neonatologists, hospital administrators, quality improvement and
performance improvement personnel, social workers, health educators and other professionals
responsible for the care of mothers and/or newborns.

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

♦ Define the five new perinatal care core measures and list numerators and denominators for each set
♦ Describe the included and excluded populations for each measure set
♦ List and define the data elements for each measure set
♦ Identify methods and resources to operationalize each of the core measures within your own facility
♦ Examine three potential challenges in implementing the new measure sets and devise methods to
address challenges
